Pear 'Pitmaston Duchess', early September. An English pear "raised in 1841 by John Wiliams at Pitmaston, Worcestershire, from 'Duchesse d'Angouleme' x 'Glou Morceau'. Original name 'Pitmaston Duchesse d'Angouleme', renamed 1870. A vigorous triploid cultivar of good quality but subject to scab. A good garden cultivar where space allows cultivation as a bush tree, but rather too vigorous for growing in restricted form." ('Pears' by Jim Arbury and Sally Pinhey)
