Pear 'Beurré Hardy', mid August. Dates back to early-19th-century France. It takes its name from Monsieur Hardy, head of arboriculture at the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris. Large, russetted fruits with smooth, white flesh and a fine flavour. Pick while slightly under-ripe and store until ready to eat.
